The end of the year is fast approaching. Whether you have had an amazing year, a ‘meh’ year, or you are looking at the calendar thinking another year has passed and I didn’t accomplish what I wanted, this post is for you. This is a simple guide to help you get what you want in 2023 and help you set yourself up for success.
I think it’s important to look at the past year from the lens of neutrality and allow yourself to be open to the good, the bad, and the in-between. This reflection may offer you valuable feedback, but also seeing any patterns and connections to habits and behaviors that you don’t want to repeat moving forward.
This starts with being honest with yourself (which is why I prefaced this with looking at your year from neutrality).
What is required of you to make this happen is simple. Write it all out, notice where you are emotionally charged – whether it’s positive or negative (you can make a note of the charge) and notice what facts come out of it. The facts are neutral! It’s what we can all agree on if we were to look at your situation.
For example, you didn’t make your revenue goal for the year. This thought may bring frustration, sadness, guilt, insert whatever emotion comes up for you. I am not suggesting that you dismiss the emotion, just write out the facts.
If this is important to you and you want it to be part of your goals for the next year, keep it on the list.
Next! The next step is fun. We aren’t going to analyze the past year. We are going to focus on the upcoming year and look at the 8 areas in your life. I provided the template below. Its called the Wants List.
The Wants List isn’t elaborate. It’s simply a template for you to fill out and get curious on where you want to focus your attention and effort on. You want a new car? Put it on there. You want to have deeper relationships with certain people – write that down. You want to be able to run a 5k – do it. Don’t hold back!
So many of us focus on what we don’t want, we end up creating iterations of more of the same because we aren’t clear on what it is that we DO want.
Be specific. Have fun and dream big. Energy flows where attention goes, so why not use your energy to create what you do want.
I have written about this in previous post about why I don’t make resolutions, you can read it here.
The cliff notes version on why I stopped making resolutions is because I don’t want to resolve anymore. I want to CREATE. The energy behind what you want starts with a feeling. If you are trying to resolve something, the feeling comes from a place of lack and need. There’s a big difference in the energy between lack and need versus abundance and want.
Resolutions deter me from moving forward. They are a response to behaviors that are not in alignment with what I truly want.
Instead of resolving something that you don’t like, try focusing on what you want and look at the why beneath what you want.
This is where focusing on what you have and what you want in your life will help you create what you desire.
If you are struggling with what you want, try focusing your attention on what you are grateful for? Can you enhance something that you are drawn too? Are the actions or routines you are doing serving you and sparking joy, peace, creativity – or whatever you are seeking?
In my professional and personal practice, setting goals and intentions are paramount, and I am a big proponent of practicing both. Let it come from knowing what you want and becoming crystal clear on what that is. So start with the Wants List and ask yourself the question:
“What do I want, and WHY do I want it?” Tap into the feeling of that experience and let it flow through you now.
Now that you completed your wants exercise, now its time to take one or two things that really stick out to you. You are going to turn that into your goal!
Keep the wants list and place it in a location where you can see it often. If you have other practices and rituals that work for you, by all means – please use them. This is about having clarity. From this place you can create a plan that works for you and decide how you want to show up, because the magic isn’t crossing the finish line.
The magic is in the process of becoming the person you want to be in pursuing the goal.
The feeling is available to you now. When you access and align with that energy, you create flow and abundance.
The 5 simple steps to your Success List:
- Spend time thinking and FEELING into what you want for the upcoming year. Fill in the eight categories without overthinking it.
- Pick one or two things on your list and turn them into a goal
- Tap into your mind and body and visualize what the end looks like (the result of the goal).
- What feelings did you have to do the things you chose to do
- What narrative or story do you want to believe to create those feelings. In other words what do you need to tell yourself about yourself to embody the feeling to show up and take action.
Do not skip this last step. This is what is going to help you take the steps forward!
This is the process I use in doing hard things and creating a life on purpose utilizing the combination of intention, energy, and strategy. I want to help you set yourself up for success in 2023.
