  • Simplify: How Reiki Helps Quiet an Overactive Mind

We live in a world that constantly tells us to do more. Read another book. Listen to another podcast. Buy another planner. Start another morning routine. Optimize your schedule. Fix yourself. There is nothing simple about any of this.

Quite frankly, it’s exhausting.

As someone who works with high-functioning women, I see the same pattern over and over. They aren't lacking motivation. They aren't lazy. They're carrying the mental load of careers, businesses, families, relationships, and the invisible responsibility of holding everything together. Their calendars are full, but their minds are even fuller.

This month at Latitude Wellness and in my personal realm, the intention is simple:

Simplify.

Not because life becomes easier overnight, but because healing and freedom often begins when we remove the unnecessary rather than adding more.

More Isn't Always Better

Many of us have been conditioned to believe that growth requires constant action. If we're not moving, producing, or improving, we feel like we're falling behind. I know I personally have been working through this old way of thinking for several years (still a work in progress – but getting better). I used to think if I wasn’t always moving or working, I would either miss out or fail to get it all done. When you own your own business, there is ALWAYS something to accomplish and unfortunately it has taken me too long to realize that this isn’t a healthy mindset to work from.

And… our nervous system doesn't measure success by how much we accomplish.

Instead it responds to safety and brain/heart coherence.

When your mind is constantly making decisions, anticipating problems, replaying conversations, and planning what's next, your body rarely can rest. You may not even realize you're living in a chronic state of mental activation.

Over time, this can look like:

  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Constant overthinking
  • Decision fatigue
  • Feeling emotionally disconnected
  • Anxiety or overwhelm
  • Feeling exhausted despite getting enough rest

Sometimes the most healing thing you can do isn't another self-improvement practice.

It's creating enough space to simply breathe.

Simplifying Your Life Starts with Your Mind

When I say simplify, I'm not talking about becoming a minimalist or throwing away half your belongings. I'm talking about reducing the mental clutter that quietly drains your energy.

Simplifying might look like:

Eating the same healthy breakfasts each week.

Creating routines you don't have to think about.

Saying no without overexplaining.

Spending time outside without your phone.

Trusting yourself instead of endlessly researching the "right" answer.

Choosing presence over perfection.

These small decisions free up energy that can be invested in the people, experiences, and purpose that matter to you and help nourish your lifeforce energy.

Nature Reminds Us That Life Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

One of the greatest lessons I continue to receive comes from simply spending time outside.

Recently, while completing my Animal Reiki training in the forest of Mt. Hood, Oregon, I was reminded that healing isn't something we force.

The trees weren't trying to become better trees. The river wasn't rushing to get somewhere. Nature simply exists in alignment with itself.

When we slow down enough to reconnect with the natural world, we remember that we're allowed to do the same. Whether it's placing your feet in a stream, sitting quietly beneath a tree, or listening to the wind, these moments invite your nervous system to soften and your mind to quiet.

Sometimes clarity isn't found by thinking harder - it's found by becoming still.

Reiki Creates Space for Clarity

One of the most common things clients tell me after a Reiki session is:

"I finally feel like I can hear myself again."

Reiki isn't about fixing you. It's about creating an environment where your body and mind can return to balance.

When your nervous system begins to regulate, the constant mental chatter often settles. Decisions become clearer. Your intuition becomes easier to hear. You stop reacting from stress and begin responding from a grounded place.

Healing doesn't always arrive as a dramatic breakthrough.

Sometimes it looks like sleeping through the night.

Taking a full breath.

Feeling peaceful for the first time in weeks.

Choosing yourself without guilt.

Those small shifts often become the foundation for lasting transformation.

Your August Invitation: Simplify

As we move through August and as many people reflect on the symbolism of the Lions Gate Portal, consider this your invitation to simplify.

Not because you should. Because you deserve to experience your life instead of constantly managing it.

Ask yourself:

What can I release that no longer requires my energy?

What routine already works so that I can stop reinventing?

Where can I choose presence instead of perfection?

The answers may be simpler than you think and perhaps that's the point.
