Self-love often feels like an abstract concept, but at its core, it starts with acceptance. Many people think they need to “fix” themselves before they can love who they are. They believe that once they lose the weight, get the promotion, heal from past wounds, become more successful, or have more money in their bank account, then they’ll finally feel worthy. But the truth is, acceptance is the gateway to real transformation.
The theme for February at Latitude Wellness is all about self love and acceptance. In our Intuitive Coaching Programs, acceptance is one of the major steps in the transformational process. We dive deep into what it means and how it feels to accept what is and create more flow within yourself and in your life. When you stop resisting, you open yourself to deeper and greater insights of inner truth and awareness.
When you accept yourself as you are, the flaws, strengths, quirks, and all, you are no longer operating from a place of judgement and self-rejection. Instead, you shift into a space of unconditional love, where growth and healing happen naturally.
Acceptance Slows Down the Cycle of Self-Criticism
Many of us have a loud inner critic (I call mine the JUDGE). This is the bi$tch voice constantly harping on us and pointing out all of the failures, flaws, and not ever being enough. This voice fuels shame, doubt, and insecurity. Whereas acceptance quiets the inner critic and helps us see through the lens of neutrality and love. Instead of seeing flaws as failures, you begin to recognize them as part of your unique journey. When you stop judging yourself harshly, self-love follows.
Acceptance Creates Inner Peace
Resistance to whom we are creates suffering and wow – this is something I have experienced most of my life! When we’re constantly wishing we were different, we live in a state of conflict with ourselves. But when we embrace who we are, we experience a sense of inner peace where we no longer feel the need to prove ourselves or seek validation from external sources.
Acceptance Makes Change Possible
Paradoxically, when we accept ourselves as we are, we actually become more open to growth. Instead of feeling broken, we start from a place of wholeness. From this space, making healthy changes, whether it’s improving self-care and habits, setting boundaries, or pursuing what fuels our fire – ie our passions, these changes become an act of love rather than punishment. As I often share with my clients – you can’t shame your way into feeling better about yourself. It’s a self-deprecating and energy draining prophecy.
Acceptance Strengthens Authenticity
Authenticity is the buzz word this year and for very good reason. When you stop trying to fit into societal molds or expectations, you give yourself permission to be fully you. You recognize that you don’t have to shrink, people-please, or seek approval. Your worth isn’t dependent on external validation, it comes from within and your opinion about YOU.
Your Self-Love Journey
The rose is a powerful symbol representing beauty, growth, self-love, and the unfolding of the soul’s journey. Just as a rose blooms in stages, so too does our spiritual evolution, unfolding layer by layer as we deepen in self-awareness, wisdom, and self-love. The thorns of the rose remind us that growth often comes with challenges, yet these struggles shape our strength and resilience. The rose is connected to the heart chakra, symbolizing love, healing, and connection to the divine. It’s a beautiful visual and reminder of inner beauty, self-love, and the infinite unfolding of the soul.
Simple Steps to Begin Your Self-Love Journey
If you’re struggling with self-worth, shame, or the constant need to please others, know that change is possible. Here are a few ways to begin embracing your authentic self:
• Practice Daily Self-Affirmations
Start your day by affirming your worth. Try saying:
“I am enough exactly as I am.”
“I embrace my imperfections and choose to accept myself fully.”
“I release the need for external validation and trust my inner wisdom.”
• Set Boundaries with Confidence
People-pleasing is a direct result of feeling unworthy. Start small by saying “no” to something that drains you and “yes” to something that fills you with joy.
• Practice Self-Compassion
Instead of beating yourself up for mistakes, GIVE GRACE (my favorite phrase right now and one I repeat often to myself and my clients) and talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend. Self-love is built on self-compassion.
• Spend Time in Reflection
Journaling, meditation, walking, getting outside, or quiet contemplation can help you uncover beliefs that no longer serve you. Ask yourself: Where am I not fully accepting myself? OR – where am I not being honest with myself? You can read more about the Power of Self Reflection in a blog post I recently wrote!
• Engage in Activities that Light You Up
Follow what excites and energizes you. When you pursue what you love, you deepen your connection to yourself.
• Surround Yourself with Supportive Energy
Seek relationships and spaces that encourage self-acceptance rather than judgment. A supportive community helps reinforce self-love. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, Choose wisely!!
