It’s February already! I felt like January lasted for an eternity. It wasn’t the vibe I was hoping to have – however it’s over and it’s time to focus on another new beginning. While the calendar year is underway, it’s natural to feel a sense of both excitement and uncertainty. The promise of new beginnings and opportunities, and the chance to redefine our intentions and goals can be incredibly exciting. However, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the idea of change, especially if we aren’t quite sure of where we are going. Besides… we are still in the heart of winter. The rest and restore phase of nature where we nestle into our comforting environment and prepare for the seasons ahead.
One of my favorite sayings is Clarity = Power. It’s not actually mine – I adopted it from Marie Forleo and it has resonated with me since I participated in her B School Program. It has evolved into deeper meaning for me as I navigate my wants, priorities, and how my life is unfolding as I continual my eternal desire to evolve and transform.
In this Latitude Wellness post, I want to share the significance of self-reflection and how to incorporate it into your daily life. It’s an essential tool in my personal practice and in my intuitive coaching programs. Self-reflection is more than just taking a moment to pause; it’s a powerful practice that can help us come into the present moment, gain clarity and insights, be honest with yourself and your surroundings, and help guide you through transformation with ease and grace.
Why Self-reflection matters
Self-reflection is the act of observing our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, actions, and results. Your thoughts ultimately create your current reality. Many of us want to experience peace, freedom, and clarity so we can navigate the ebbs and flows of life with grace and grit. However, all too often, our darn mind gets in the way and repeats what we already know because that is what is familiar and comfortable. Self-reflection allows us to gain a deeper understanding of who we are, our values, our likes and desires, and helps us identify areas of growth and healing. In a world filled with constant distractions and external pressures, taking the time to tune inward can offer the clarity we need to move forward with intention.
Without self-reflection, we risk living on autopilot. Some argue with this so as not to expend any more energy than needed. If evolving, growth, and change aren’t important to you – then you may want to find a different post to read!
How Self-reflection leads to clarity and purpose
When we’re feeling lost or overwhelmed, it’s easy to become bogged down by the weight of everything we think we should do. Yes, I said the should word. In my opinion, should implies so much doubt, heaviness, and burdensome energy. One of my very first blog posts I wrote for my original Latitude Wellness website was about shoulding on yourself. I still believe in the words I wrote back in 2018. You can read more about it here.
Anyways, I digress.
Self-reflection allows us to step back from these external pressures and tune into what we need and desire in the moment because quite frankly that changes as well. The season I was in when I authored that original post is way different than what my reality is now.
Self-reflection creates space for clarity
By pausing and reflecting, we give our minds a break. The noise of life can cloud our judgment, making it difficult to hear our own intuition. Self-reflection quiets that noise, giving us the mental space to process what we need. Through journaling, meditation, or simply sitting in silence, we can tap into our inner wisdom, helping us make decisions that align with our true selves.
Self-reflection reveals patterns and limiting beliefs
Self-reflection helps us uncover the patterns that have kept us stuck. We can ask ourselves: What thoughts/beliefs have been influencing my choices? Are they supporting or hindering my growth? When we take an honest look and assessment at these patterns, we can begin to shift the beliefs that are no longer relevant, creating space for the new path forward.
Self-reflection builds confidence in our decisions
The more we reflect on our experiences and understand how we’ve navigated to where we are, the more confidence we build in our ability to make decisions. Reflection helps us recognize our strengths, acknowledge our progress, and trust that we can navigate future challenges with clarity and resilience. Confidence is matching your word(s) with action and when you follow through with it, even when it feels hard, you are flexing that muscle, and it feels really darn good.
How to Incorporate self-reflection into your life
Making self-reflection a habit doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as carving out time each day to check in with yourself. Here are a few ways you can get started:
Journaling for Clarity
Writing down your thoughts is a powerful way to process your emotions and uncover new insights. Try setting aside a few minutes each morning or evening to journal about how you’re feeling, what you’re struggling with, and what you’re grateful for. Use prompts such as:
• “What’s one thing I need clarity on right now?”
• “What am I letting go of in this new year?”
• “How do I want to feel this year?”
Meditation and Mindfulness
Meditation is an excellent tool for clearing the mind and gaining insight into your inner world. Set an intention for your meditation practice, such as focusing on gaining clarity or connecting with your purpose. As the bowls play during a sound bath or a quiet meditation session, allow the vibrations to deepen your focus and invite the clarity you seek. Reiki is a beautiful way to create safe space to tune into your inner world by connecting to the universal wisdom and lifeforce energy. This will bring more peace and clarity to what you are seeking.
Ask Meaningful Questions
Sometimes, all it takes is to ask the right question. Consider questions that will prompt you to dig deeper into your life and choices:
• “What would my life look like if I made decisions based on my highest values?”
• “Where am I holding myself back, and why?”
• “What is the next small step I can take toward my clarity and purpose?”
Create Space for Silence
With so many demands on our time, it’s easy to forget the importance of silence. Silence allows us to listen to our inner voice without distraction. Find moments throughout your day to sit quietly and simply observe your thoughts without judgment. Allow the sound of your breath or the resonance of sound bowls to guide you into a place of deep peace.
The Journey of Self-Reflection
Self-reflection is not a one-time activity; it’s an ongoing journey. As we move through the year, we’ll encounter new challenges, growth, and opportunities for self-discovery. By making reflection a regular practice, we cultivate a deeper relationship with ourselves and develop the clarity we need to live with intention and purpose.
This is an opportune time to embrace this practice. As you reflect on your intentions, desires, and goals, remember that the clarity you seek is already within you. Give yourself permission to slow down, check in, and let your inner wisdom guide the way.
With love and gratitude,
Alexis
