  • Is it Time to Change Your Story

Your personal narrative, the story you tell yourself, is how you show up in the world. While you may not be your thoughts, when you string them together to form your life story, that narrative shapes your actions and your reality. If you aren’t happy with your story, maybe it’s time to change the narrative. The good news is that you can retrain your beliefs by thinking with intention and on purpose.

We can think on purpose. Our mind doesn’t control who we are unless we allow it. If you’re feeding your mind with constant negative thoughts, self-limiting beliefs, and doubt, maybe it’s time to rewrite your story. Every day we have the incredible ability to start over. All it takes is a little awareness, a lot of practice, and the desire to change your narrative.

Whatever we create in our mind will be reflected in our outer world.

Your inner intelligence is much greater and smarter than you give it credit for, so why not tap into your innate wisdom and harness this power to your benefit? Your biggest point of power is this moment. The present is where you get to decide how you want to think!

What happened in the past is just that—past. Hanging on to it tightly, as though you can change it with a better solution or a more thoughtful response, only creates anxiety, worry, depression, and suffering.

You get to write your story.

You are in control of what happens in your mind. Stop giving that power away to others! Before we dive into how to change the narrative, consider this important question: Who do you want to be in your story? Are you the victim at the mercy of your circumstances, or are you the hero or heroine taking responsibility and action from an empowering place?

Everything starts with your thoughts. Your current thoughts, influenced by past emotionally driven experiences, shape your beliefs when repeated over time. These beliefs become your personality, defining how you present yourself to the world.

Thoughts generate feelings, and these feelings drive your actions—or lack thereof. The good news is that you have the power to change your thoughts and adopt new beliefs. It is entirely possible for you to believe anything you choose, regardless of your past experiences or the information you’ve received. You are in control of your beliefs.

Creating new beliefs involves thinking new thoughts, stepping into the unknown, and embracing all your emotions—fear, doubt, rejection, as well as growth, opportunity, happiness, peace, and action.

Remember, you are not your thoughts; you are your actions. Align your thoughts and actions to start creating the life you truly desire!

Steps to Start Rewriting Your Story:

Awareness of Your Story

Being aware of your current narrative is the very first and crucial step in this process.  A simple check in and asking, what am I thinking right now will bring you to the present moment and examine what is going on in your mind.  If you can’t identify the thought, that is okay! Check in with what is happening in your body and do a body scan.  Do you have a pit in your stomach, is your heart rate elevated, do you feel clammy, do you have tightness in your chest?  Are you perspiring, have chills, or holding tension in your body?  How is your breathing?  Are you feeling a tingly sensation? These feelings are physiological responses to your current thoughts.  Taking a moment to become the Observer of your thoughts and scanning your body will bring you more in tune with what is happening in your mind.  You may think the story is innocuous, but keep in mind you’ve repeated these beliefs enough that this is the current narrative.

Observe Your Words Within Your Story

Pay attention to the language you use regularly. Words like “should,” “can’t,” “don’t,” “must,” “have to,” and “need” can create feelings of urgency, doubt, and exhaustion. Notice how these words make you feel and consider how they shape your narrative. It’s helpful to describe the feeling or emotion you are experiencing in the moment.  Whether in your mind or out loud.  Get as creative as you like in this step.

Letting it Go

From your place of observation, identify the thoughts and feelings you are ready to release. For example, if you always thought of yourself as someone who is always late, recognize the impact this belief has on your life. Decide to let go of that story and replace it with a new one that reflects who you want to be.

Reframing the Story

Use empowering language like “I am,” “I will,” “I want,” and “I can.” This helps you speak kindly to yourself and take back your power. Shift your thoughts from a place of victimhood to one of empowerment and responsibility. Small changes in your story can shift your energy and create the results you want.

Practice

Consistently remind yourself of your new narrative. Visualize yourself living this new story and practice the thoughts that will support it. Change takes time and repetition but remember that the story you’ve been telling yourself has been repeated for many years. This step is very important.  Practice practice practice. When you wake up in the morning, think about your new belief.  Say it out loud. Write it down. Look in the mirror and say it yourself. Your brain will start supporting your new belief by looking for signs. Notice the feelings that come up and connect the belief with the feeling. You are going to start making decisions in support of your new beliefs.  You are going to change your world.  It is truly amazing.

Changing the Narrative

Changing the narrative is simple, but not easy. Remember, you can create whatever you want in your mind, even when the evidence around you suggests otherwise. The story you tell yourself can be revised, modified, deleted, or remain the same—the choice is yours!

Your words are your wands, so use them to your benefit; the body is always listening and will respond to whatever you are thinking and speaking. Remember you are not your thoughts, you are your actions. The thought of doing something out of the ordinary is challenging to comprehend than the actual act of doing it and making it happen.  Your brain wants to protect you and conserve energy. It prefers efficiency and routine.  Anything new or any discomfort that arises will signal DANGER to the brain. Do it anyways. Not only does this builds confidence, but it is also training the brain to think and believe the new story.
